Funding for one PhD assistantship in the Doctoral Program (PhD) in Education with a specialization in Exercise, Fitness, and Health Promotion (EFHP) is available in collaboration with the Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center. We are seeking a highly-qualified individual that wants to attain their terminal degree at Virginia’s largest public research university. The graduate research assistantship is in Human Movement Science.

Required Qualifications & Responsibilities:

  1. Master’s degree in Athletic Training, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, or related field
  2. Must hold current fitness certification such as ACSM, ACE, NAMS, NCSA, AFFA, NASM, or NFPT
  3. CPR/AED certification
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  5. Ability to work week nights and weekends and travel as needed


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the areas of:
1. Training and programming: trains/assists with personal training and other duties as required with Fitness Programs, responsible for creating new fitness programs, present, review and apply new fitness assessment protocol/required for every client, documentation requirements for all individual client assessments/workouts and progression, assist with evaluation of trainers and floor staff then follow up with improvement plans/continued education, monitor all trainer client documentation for accuracy and adherence to programming, and work closely with Group Fitness Coordinator and Fitness Specialist to develop the best strategies for Fitness department
2. Education: providing ongoing in-house education/trainers meetings, including new and specialized modalities, providing seminars, monthly newsletter for our members and the community as well as material for members through email and social media platforms, implementation and consistency of mentoring/partnering/hands on application, and developing an outline of continuing education guidelines.
3. Marketing: understanding of service to clients first/level of commitment, recruiting clients for personal training, provide marketing tools for client acquisition, assist with continued development and implementation for efficient client systems (contacting clients, employees meeting quotas, merging the gap with fitness and marketing tools), and Interact with staff in positive and developmental capacity
