The UCD School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering seeks to appoint an outstanding academic with a strong record of research and teaching in Dynamics and Control. Dynamics is a core discipline within Mechanical Engineering and has strong connections with Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Continuum Mechanics, and most aspects of Control. It is also fundamentally important for other branches of engineering within the UCD College of Engineering & Architecture, including Biomedical, Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, Civil, Electrical, and Manufacturing.

The successful candidate will have Dynamics, or Dynamics and Control as their core identity and will be expected to bring their own research interests and relevant numerical and/or experimental expertise to the School. The School has recently strengthened its expertise in structural dynamics and system identification; this present appointment is intended to broaden our core expertise in Dynamics, Vibrations and Control. Areas of national strategic importance related to Dynamics include research on medical device design, energy conversion devices, energy harvesting; precision machining and manufacturing; vibrations; vibration control. In addition to interacting with staff and research groups outside the School and College, such as in Physics (e.g. on space activities and instrument design), in Mathematical Sciences (e.g. on fluid-structure interactions), and elsewhere, the ideal candidate will also play a major role in strengthening the current research priorities within the School, such as:

Biomechanics (e.g. gait analysis, accident reconstruction, impact biomechanics, joint, tissue and limb mechanics), robotics and assistive technology, prosthetic design, sports biomechanics and orthopaedic biomechanics;
Medical devices, especially for surgery and for computer assisted surgery;
Manufacturing and machining, including vibration control, automation and robotics;
Vibrations (e.g. control of structures, flexible mechanical systems and spacecraft);
Characterisation and identification of dynamic systems and features of interest;
Energy conversion and energy harvesting .
