I would like to make a suggestion to those organizing future conferences:
If a dinner or banquet forms an integral part of the meeting, please include its
cost in the registration fee.
This year I am attending two meetings at which the banquet has appeared as a
separate item (and a separate cost) on the registration form. My University
(and I suspect a lot of others) will not pay for such functions, as they are
classed as "entertainment". I thus have the option of either paying out of my
own pocket for an expensive meal, or else not going, and so missing part of the
meeting.
O.K. - I can afford to go! But I not sure that everyone can!!
