Motor Control for the Spinal Cord-Injured: Australian Postgraduate Award
(Industry) (APA(I))

The University of Sydney

Applications are called from citizens of Australia or permanent residents
of Australia who have lived in Australia for at least 12 months for a full
time PhD scholarship to carry out research into control systems for spinal
cord-injured mobility.

The Project:
The task of the successful candidate will be related to solving the control
problems for achieving mobility in people with spinal cord injuries who
have been implanted with a multi-channel muscle stimulator.

The Scholarship
The scholarship includes a tax-exempt stipend of $22,030 per year indexed
annually for three years and removal and thesis expenses.

Role of APA(I)
The project is a partnership among the University of Sydney and Neopraxis,
a wholly owned subsidiary of Cochlear Ltd. and the Northern Sydney Area
Health Service. Thus the candidate would interact with engineers from a
commercial environment and rehabilitation specialists as well as an
international research team. The candidate will use control system theory
to develop methods of improving the mobility of the spinal cord-injured.
The effectiveness and efficiency of the control systems will be tested in a
biomechanics laboratory where data collection, including interaction with
subjects, will be part of the experience. The project will give the
candidate a thorough grounding in quantitative research methods, management
of a research project and working in a research team.
Essential background includes an appropriate honours I or IIa undergraduate
degree in biomechanics, engineering, or equivalent, research experience,
control system theory, and computer modelling.
Desirable background includes Matlab programming, three-dimensional
biomechanics data collection and analysis skills.
