Hello,

Alexander et al. (1979, reference below) used a simple
formula to estimate the maximum value of the vertical component of
the ground reaction force (at mid-stance) on a single limb of a
running quadruped:

F = (3.14159 * p * mass * g) / (4 * duty factor)

where p is the proportion of body weight that the limbs (fore/hind)
support. For a biped, of course, p would be 1; in most quadrupeds
fore and hind p would respectively be ~0.6 and 0.4.

Has anyone in the literature commented on this formula since
then, especially with revisions of the formula? Please reply
off-list and I can post a summary if it gets interesting. Thanks!
