Dear BIOMECH-L'ers:

We are beginning a set of experiments to examine the biomechanics of
braking a fall with the outstretched hand(s). We will examine both
the pre-contact and post-contact phases of this task, and
experimental data will include 3D positions of skin surface markers
from a motion measurement system, and hand contact forces from a
force platform. We would like to complement our kinematic measures
with estimates (based on inverse dynamics) of upper extremity joint
torques. In addition to torques at the wrist and elbow, we are
interested in estimating shoulder flexion/extension torques, shoulder
abduction/adduction torques, and shoulder internal/external rotation
torques. To do so, we must of course estimate the shoulder joint
centre from the marker position data. However, we have not been able
to locate references that identify techniques and marker sets for
accomplishing this. Any suggestions or pointers to relevant
references would be greatly appreciated.

A secondary interest of ours is to identify scapular contributions to
shoulder kinematics/torque generation, and again any guidance in this
area would be very much appreciated.
