Biomechanics of a New Concept Shoe:
Australian Postgraduate Award (Industry) (APA(I))

Applications are called from citizens of Australia or permanent residents
of Australia who have lived in Australia for at least 12 months for a full
time PhD scholarship to carry out research into a high performance walking

The Project:
The task of the successful candidate will be to apply biomechanical
principles to test fundamental concepts of foot function during walking and
the design and development of a new concept walking shoe.

The Scholarship
The scholarship includes a tax-exempt stipend of $22,720 per year indexed
annually for three years and removal and thesis expenses.

Role of APA(I)
The project is a partnership between the University of Sydney and ASICS
Tiger Oceania. Thus the candidate would interact with biomechanists and
engineers from a commercial environment. The candidate will develop
concepts of propulsion and efficiency as they relate to the cooperative
functioning of the ankle, midfoot, and metatarso-phalangeal joints during
walking barefoot and in shoes and test the concepts during walking in a
shoe custom-built to foot function requirements. The candidate will be
involved in biomechanical testing in an advanced biomechanics laboratory,
interact with subjects, and will receive a thorough grounding in
quantitative research methods, management of a research project and working
in a research team.

Essential background includes an appropriate Honours I or IIa undergraduate
degree in biomechanics, engineering, or equivalent research experience.
Desirable background includes three-dimensional biomechanics data
collection and analysis skills.

Applications should be sent directly to Richard Smith, Faculty of Health
Sciences, PO Box 170, Lidcombe, Australia 1825 or emailed to
