MEngSc studentship

'Analysis of European and Asian Knee Anthropometrics for Enhanced Medical
Device Performance and Manufacture'

An MEngSc studentship, funded for two years by Enterprise Ireland under the
Applied Research Grants scheme, is currently available for the above
project, resulting from collaboration between the Bioengineering Research
Group and a major multi-national Orthopaedic manufacturer. A competitive
tax-free stipend is offered and will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. The funding will also provide the necessary fees for
registration for the MEngSc degree.

Project Outline:
The design and manufacture of orthopaedic device technology relies on the
use of dimensional data for the anatomy of interest. Historically, much of
the data used in device design has originated from a relatively small sample
size of Caucasian origin. Current devices are frequently based on the
historical sizing rationale and are therefore not optimal for certain
populations. The specific objective of the project is therefore to provide a
significant level of anthropometric data for the key dimensional variables
of the human knee and to identify differentiating factors between the ethnic
groups studied.

The principal achievement will result from the software based image analysis
techniques used to reconstruct 3D CT and MRI data of the human knee,
supplied by clinical contacts in Europe and Japan. The dimensional data will
be analysed by sex, ethnic origin, age and clinical condition. From this
analysis, quantification of critical ethnic group dependent anthropometric
factors will enable specific design rules to be developed.

The position is available from the 1st January 2001. Candidates with a 1st
class or Upper second (2.1) primary degree in one of the following areas
should apply: Mechanical Engineering, Bio-engineering, Mathematical Physics
or a closely related subject. A demonstrated experience in the use of Image
Analysis software would be a distinct advantage.

process please contact:
