PhD vacancy in VR and biomechanics

An excellent opportunity exists for PhD candidates to participate in the
newly founded multidisciplinary research network VOR (Virtual
Orthopaedic Reality) at the Institute of Automatic Control Engineering
of Germany's top Munich University of Technology.

We are searching for 2 PhD candidates who will contribute to the
development of a virtual reality (VR) based simulator that should
support medical education and training in the field of orthopaedics. The
project is performed in cooperation with the Clinic for Orthopaedics and
Sport Orthopaedics, the prostheses company Merzendorfer, and further
external partners (BASiS Institut for Biomechanics, GSF medis, etc.).
The main tasks will be:
1. Development of a haptic display to simulate physiological and
pathological knee joint properties on an artificial leg. This includes
setting up the VR laboratory environment, biomechanical modelling and
identification of knee pathologies, and the design of feedback control
strategies for the haptic display.
2. Development of a graphical display for the dynamic visualisation of
anatomical knee components. This includes the acquisition of medical
images (CT, MRI, US, X-ray), image processing (segmentation, 3D
reconstruction), movement animation of internal anatomical structures,
and the implementation of the graphical information in the VR
environment by different display technologies (e.g., shutter glasses,
head mounted display).

The successful candidate should have a Dipl.-Ing. or related degree
(e.g., Master of Science) in Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical
Engineering or Computer Science. Furthermore, she or he should have a
background in some of the following fields: biomechanics, control
engineering, robotics, modelling and simulation, signal/image
processing, graphical animation, medical imaging, orthopaedics. The
candidate should be willing to supplement knowledge in other fields.
Ability of German language is not required, if the candidate speaks

Salary is paid according to the German "BAT II a" rate, which is
approximately 1.400,- Euros after subtracting tax and social insurance.
