I am requesting help, or suggestions on how to solve the following problem:
I conducted a research project on polar bears to examine whether the
presence and absence of tundra vehicles elicits different vigilance
behaviour in polar bears. As it turns out, bears have a higher rate of
vigilance when vehicles are around a bear. To bring this fact to a level
that management agencies can understand, I would like to calculate the
energy expended during these head-ups. As I understand, the weight of the
head, the distance moved from groundlevel to highest point moved, etc. are
needed for calculations. Other colleagues told me that there is also the
difficulty due to flexible tendons moving levers. I am just trying to get an
estimation, as simple as possible but within realistic values. If any of you
could help me with some ideas on how to calculate energy expenditures for
these head-movements, I would be very thankful.
Thank you all for your time.
