View Full Version : Graduate Position in Validating Surgical Simulators at UBC

We have recently received a major award from NSERC's Collaborative Health
Research Projects program for validating surgical simulations of
minimally-invasive procedures. Our goal is to develop a quantitative
measure for assessing surgical performance and ergonomic stress in
laparoscopic (minimally-invasive) surgery and use differences in the measure
between the operative and simulator settings to refine simulators. The
results will allow us to evaluate the relative performance of advanced
surgical instruments and will lead to quantitative measures of the motor
aspects of a surgeon's operative skills.

We are looking for two graduate students in mechanical engineering
(biomechanics) and one in computer science (haptic interfaces) to work on
this study in cooperation with four other professors: Dr. Karim Qayumi
(Director of the Surgical Education Centre at Vancouver Hospital), Dr. Alex
Nagy (Laparoscopic Surgeon at Vancouver Hospital), Dr. Lance Rucker
(Director of Surgical Skills Training at the UBC Dental School) and Dr.
Karon Maclean (Professor of Computer Science). All positions are available
September 1, 2001, although both earlier and later starts may be possible.
International applicants are welcome.

The focus of these projects will be on designing and validating a surgical
simulation, developing and refining performance measures, assessing surgeon
performance using the new measures, and designing and evaluating improved
tools for laparoscopic surgery.

The University of British Columbia is one of Canada's top three research

Pacific Ocean and on the fourth side by a regional park, yet it is only 15
