MEngSc studentship - Immediate Availability

'Analysis of European and Asian Knee Anthropometrics'

An MEngSc studentship, funded for two years by Enterprise Ireland under the
Applied Research Grants scheme, is currently available for the above
project, resulting from collaboration between the Bioengineering Research
Group and a major multi-national Orthopaedic manufacturer. A competitive
tax-free stipend is offered and will be commensurate with qualifications and
experience. The funding will also provide the necessary fees for
registration for the MEngSc degree.

Project Outline:
The design and manufacture of orthopaedic device technology relies on the
use of dimensional data for the anatomy of interest. Historically, much of
the data used in device design has originated from a relatively small sample
size of Caucasian origin. Current devices are frequently based on the
historical sizing rationale and are therefore not optimal for certain
populations. The specific objective of the project is provide anthropometric
data for the key dimensional variables of the human knee, based on 3D
analysis of CT and MRI data sets, and to identify differentiating factors
between the ethnic groups studied.

Reconstruction of raw data, through the application and development of
appropriate software tools, together with the application of suitable
statistical tools to characterise the key dimensional variables form the
core tasks within the project.

Extensive interaction with local researchers and sponsors will be required.

ELIGIBILITY
Candidates with a 1st class or Upper second (2.1) primary degree in one of
the following areas should apply: Mechanical Engineering, Bio-engineering,
Mathematical Physics or a closely related subject. A demonstrated experience
in the use of Image Analysis software would be a distinct advantage.

For further information on the subject and details of the application
process please contact:
