Call for abstracts - Tenth Annual Symposium on
Submission Deadline - December 10th, 2001

Dear Colleagues:

This is the second announcement and first call for abstracts for the
Tenth Annual Symposium on Computational Methods in Orthopaedic
Biomechanics (the "pre-ORS" meeting).

Location and Registration: The pre-ORS symposium will be held on
Saturday, February 9, 2002 at the auditorium on the south campus of the
University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas (UTSW).
Registration will begin at 8 a.m., with a single session format running
through the afternoon. Pre-registration for the meeting can be performed

electronically at: http://www.rice.edu/pre-ORS2002/preregistration.html.

Objectives: The objectives of the symposium are to present the most
current thinking on the impact of computer assisted techniques in the
field of orthopaedic biomechanics, to educate scientist and researchers
in the use of these techniques, and to promote the use of computer
technology in biomechanical research. The symposium will provide ample
opportunity for personal interaction with faculty and other symposium
participants and will be a unique educational experience for the
presenters. The pre-ORS is the premier international forum on the use of

a new breed of computer based tools in orthopaedic biomechanics.

By tradition of this symposium, presentation of research is limited to
"junior" researchers (either graduate students or PhDs within five years

of their degree) who are actively involved in computational work of any
nature related to orthopaedics. The idea is that these individuals know
most about the details of their computational work, and therefore are
best qualified to describe and discuss this work. This format also
provides a forum for work that is typically difficult to present at
conferences, which generally have less emphasis on methods than is
planned here.

Typical issues that have been discussed in the past include: computer
modeling of whole bones from quantitative computed tomography
scans; finite element formulation and implementation ofnon-linear
constitutive models for soft tissues; development and numerical
behavior of algorithms for simulation of bone remodeling; computer
modeling of bone-implant systems; contact problems; micro-mechanical
modeling of tissues; and motion/dynamic analysis of the skeleton.

Abstracts: Abstracts are requested for all areas of computational
research of interest to the general orthopaedic biomechanics community.
As in the past, this meeting is a nonarchival forum for graduate
students and postdocs to present their ongoing research. Presentations
should be given by the student/postdoc primarily responsible for the
research, not by the PI. Abstracts not exceeding one page should be sent

via email as attachments in .pdf format or as Word'95 file to
The deadline for abstracts is December 10, 2001. By submitting an
abstract, it is understood that you will present your work in person if
abstract is accepted, and that this work is not being presented at the
Orthopaedic Research Society. Any questions concerning abstract
submission can be sent to this email address as well.
