View Full Version : foot pressure mesure: summary of responses

12-03-2001, 02:58 AM

Below is a summary of the responses to the question I posed two weeks
ago on the foot pressure mesure. I wish to thank all the participants
whose responses are included below. I received a number of responses
from people who wanted to have the responses.

Thanks again,

Some time ago, me and my colegues at the German Sport University Cologne
a study of the realibility an accuracy of pressure distribution systems.
before you choose one system, you have to know about the important
you want to investigate. For this the area under the foot and the
measurement frequency is important. Especially at movements with high
you need a high measurement frequency (more than 200 Hz probably). The
famous systems are:

PEDAR (Fa. Novel in munich)

(in this ranking)

Dear colleague
Im from Charles Univezity in Prague, department of anatomy and
and we just now developed brand new " Force contact - pressure
Charakteristic of the Platform.
scaninng area of the matrix 400 x 300 mm
read cycle 40 - 300 Hz
curent maximum 135 pictures, soon will be more
time of measure 0.45 - 3.375 sec, soon vil be in minutes 30-60
measuring range 0 - 414 kPa
preassure sensor 3 x 3 mm total 7500 sensors
Principle of resistor matrix ( elastic rubber)
Measure of contact charakteristics
Description of clinical factors ( stroke, parkinson, etc. )
Im so sorry, but now Im so busy. But if you will be interested about
we can send you more information. Anyway 21.11 we are going on Ph.D.
students meeting which is in you country )))), Univerzity in Strasburg

Pl. see www.rsscan.com
RSSCAN is in Belgium and they have representative in France.
Pl. talk to Ms. Mireille Deschynkel

I can add my own 2-penny experience. I was using
the Novel system for a few years and my
recommendations are:
you must use the Pedar insoles if you look for a
real variety of activities;
They are useful up to 70Hz only (which is good
for walking but not for running fast);
they are very accurate and repeatable;
they are very sensitive and expensive, shich
means you might have to spend a lot on new
insoles very often;
There is a Belgian company I forgot her name
which sells almost identical stuff for a lot less
Good luck

Perhaps Laurent Hoffman (hoffmann@numo.ch) has something for you, I
he has measured foot pressures with sensors inside shoes, but he is a
representative of the Footscan system, built by RScan, Belgium.

we are using foot pressure measurements mostly for clinical
investigations but
have recently also evaluated soccer shoes with pressure insoles. We are
the EMED platform and PEDAR insoles and are happy with their
performance. In
essence, you have to decide first what your requirements are regarding
and spatial resolution. This is depending on the subjects and loading
rates of
your activities of interest. Once you are clear about your requirements
you can
look at the performance of the different systems and their sensor
I hope this helps a little. Kind regards,

Dieter Rosenbaum...

I will send you some information on our system by mail post. We have
systems available for gait analysis and when you take the time to check
our website (www.rsscan.com) you will notice we have the most advanced
system at the moment. We have the possibility to scan our system at 500
Hz, to synchronize other equipment and to implement a force plate. This
synchronizing/implementing idea/equipment is patented by RSscan
INTERNATIONAL, giving the possibility for a dynamic calibration, and
perfect pressure values.

You will receive the information soon, and you can always contact me for
some more information.

I recommend a eqipment developed by IBV.

This euqipment is made by piezo-electronic devices.
Good accuracy, but poorer resolution than tekscan like system.
