Hello,

My request for information on dynamic modelling of human arm was
posted to biomch-l a while ago. I appreciate all the people who
have kindly sent their responses to me (a brief summary of the
messages I've received is attached to the end of this post).

My application is mainly in the modelling of the central
neural control mechanisms related to the muscle activiations.
In addition to the responses, here are some of the papers that
I myself found very useful to my project:

We (Joe Mansour and Pat Crago) are currently developing dynamic models of
the human arm. We do not have any publications describing this effort so
far. Currently we have two different implementations. One is for the elbow,
wrist and forearm joints, and the second is for the hand, including the
index and long fingers and the thumb. Both are implemented in ADAMS, a
mechanical dynamic simulation package.
I know that Wells in Canada is also developing a hand model and is
also using ADAMS.

One of the most interesting biomechanical modells I've seen recently
can be found in J. Biomechanics, Vol.24, No.12, pp.1165-1171, 1991.
It's a 2-D modell with 4 discrete masses.

We ourselfes are currently developing a 2-D 'wobbling mass' modell of
the hand-arm system for simulations with vibration stress.

We have a group here at The University of Texas who has begun to
work on this problem as well, constructing a 7 DOF 3-D model including
musculoskeletal parameters. Roger Gonzalez is a PhD student who is
coordinating much of this work. We would appreciate receiving a copy of
any replies you receive to this inquiry. I'll ask Roger to communicate
with you about where we are and what we have found which might be of
use to you.

I too am interested in dynamic models of the upper limb. My PhD

Hello. I am only working on the kinematics of the human arm,
not the dynamics (I'm analyzing the motions people use doing
daily living tasks and then using that for a simulation of a
powered upper limb orthosis with fewer degrees of freedom than
the arm). I'm using a basic robotic-like analysis with
successive rotations, including carrying angle (before elbow
flexion) as a constant passive angle.

upper extremity model. This dissertation contains a fairly
