The Abstracts can be sent by e-mail (text, word, pdf, or ps format) or
by fax.

*************************************************
PURPOSE:

The purpose of this event is to provide an updated overview of
typical MODELS and TOOLS used in
MATHEMATICAL and COMPUTATIONAL studies of
BIOLOGICAL TISSUES, ORGANS AND SYSTEMS.
*************************************************
LECTURERS:

· Prof. Gerhard Holzapfel, Austria (mechanics of soft tissues)
· Prof. Peter Hunter, New Zealand (mechano-electrical function of the
heart)
· Prof. J. Huyghe, The Netherlands (thermo-chemo-electro-mechanics of
porous media)
· Prof. J. van Leewen, Netherlands (skeletal muscles and neuromuscular
control)
· Prof. Clyde Martin, USA (control and mechanics of human movement
systems)
· Prof. Oliver Jensen, UK (physiological fluid mechanics)

*************************************************
DESCRIPTION:

This event is part of the Thematic Term on Mathematics and Biology
http://www.cs.math.ist.utl.pt/cim.www/cimE/eventos02.html
sponsored by CIM (Centro Internacional de Matemática)
http://www.cs.math.ist.utl.pt/cim.www/cimpage.html ,
a member of ERCOM - European Research Centres on Mathematics.
http://www.maphysto.dk/ERCOM/
The event has two components: Advanced Course and Research Workshop.
The advanced course will include lectures on the mechanics of soft
tissues,
thermo-chemo-electro-mechanics of porous media, skeletal muscles and
neuromuscular control, control and mechanics of human movement systems,
physiological fluid mechanics and mechano-electrical function of the
heart.
The course is directed to Ph. D. students, applied mathematicians,
physicists, biologists, medical doctors, engineers and other
researchers

working in related areas who wish a better understanding of biological
phenomena and want to develop reliable models for them.
In the workshop component, research papers submitted by the
participants,
will describe new developments and discuss future research directions.
It will also provide an opportunity for the establishment or
development of interdisciplinary collaborations between researchers
from
different areas.
*************************************************
FEES

The fees for the course/workshop are:
Regular fee 160 (Euro)
Student fee 130 (Euro)
These fees include the lecture notes, coffee breaks and workshop
dinner.

The number of participants is limited to about 50.
