Medical Engineering Research – Cardiff Motion Analysis
Research Technician – Two years fixed term
Salary: Grade D Technician Range £14,412 to £18,805
Closing Date: 15.06.02
This post provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to the
application of three-dimensional motional analysis technology in an
on-going clinical trial. The trial was established in conjunction with
the University of Wales Hospital to investigate the function of the
knee after total knee replacement. The study is funded by DePuy,
a Johnson and Johnson Company, specialising in orthopaedic
implants, and has been running for 3 years. It has recently been
agreed to run it for a further two years with a review after this time.
The job will involve organising patient visits to the newly refurbished
Cardiff Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory where you will meet
patients before and after their operations. Working with other
members of the research team, you will be involved in measuring
the patient’s ability to walk with special focus on the knee joint.
Computer controlled data collection and processing procedures will
be an integral part of your duties and training in the use of the
specialist computer software will be provided on commencement of
the post. Knowledge of basic computer skills, such as Excel and
Word will also be beneficial.
Candidates should possess good organisational skills since they
will be responsible for the upkeep of a diary of patient visits and will
help with the day to day preparation of the laboratory for patient
visits. Excellent communication skills are essential to the post
because the candidate will be working with vulnerable patients on a
routine basis in person or on the telephone.
Candidates must posses the equivalent of at least 2 UK ‘A’ Levels
or equivalent UK BTEC Certificate. The successful candidate may
be encouraged to study for a Master of Philosophy degree to be
undertaken in conjunction with the post.
