A Post-Doctoral research position is available in the Ergonomics Research
Laboratory of Dr. Shrawan Kumar at the University of Alberta. The
successful candidate will participate in NSERC funded research on the
electromyographic studies of spinal muscles of the healthy and the injured.
Opportunities exist to interact in collaborative research with Applied
Mathematics Department who specialize in mathematical modeling, neural
network modeling, advanced statistical applications and programming. For

Applicants should have a recent doctoral degree and will be expected to have
a record of research in signal processing and advanced statistical
applications. Laboratory experience with human experimentation and
electromyography is useful. Mathematical background with some programming
ability and interest in biomechanics preferred.

The Ergonomics Research Laboratory (ERL) at the University of Alberta,
Edmonton, Canada is devoted to the study of musculoskeletal and
neuromuscular functioning and injury/disorders that are associated with
occupational activities. Starting September 2002 there will be 5 Ph.D. and
2 M.Sc. students in addition to a research engineer and a postdoctoral
fellow in ERL. The background of the current students and staff ranges from
physicians, physical therapists, zoologists, engineers and mathematicians.
This cohesive and complementary team provides a fertile, diverse and a rich
environment for developing original ideas and methodologies and to pursue
them. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art electromyography
equipments and motion and force analysis tools. The laboratory is also
richly endowed with many one of a kind invented and fabricated research
tools. Thus the successful candidate will join an established and dynamic
research team.

This full-time NSERC funded position will enable highly qualified doctoral
graduate to prepare for careers in multi/interdisciplinary areas. The
candidate should have:

a) Ph.D. in a discipline dealing with signal processing and advanced
statistical applications;

b) Some experience/interest in human experimentation.

The position is for two years from the date of start contingent upon
satisfactory performance evaluation at the end of the first year. The
position is available immediately. The annual salary is $30,000.
