An EPSRC funded PhD position is currently available on Bone Mechanics.
The funding only covers University fees for EU member countries.

The project is on modelling of cancellous bone. Cancellous bone can be
considered for modelling purposes as a typical 'cellular solid'
following the approach developed by Ashby and Gibson (Gibson L.J. and
Ashby M.F., Cellular Solids: Structure and Properties, 2nd edn.
Cambridge University Press, 1997). Diseases of cancellous bone include
osteoporosis and osteoarthritis which have serious debilitating effects
upon mobility and health of particularly the elderly.

The project will involve some experimental work characterising
individual trabeculae and some modelling of the mechanical properties of
the bulk solid. It is hoped to extend the modelling approach into
fracture, possibly including fatigue effects. The validated models will
then be used to investigate diseases such as osteoporosis and
osteoarthritis which are known to increase fracture risk.

Applicants require a good degree in Engineering, Materials Science,
Physical science or other related discipline.
Maintenance rates will be set at above the base EPSRC level.

For more information or an informal chat please email or telephone myself.
