At present I am doing a bit of research in the area of artificial joint
testing and am having a hard time finding an answer to my question. I
thought maybe someone out there may have information that would help.
Earlier in the month I heard of the testing of joints being done in
solution. I am wondering about the procedure, make-up of the solution, if a
type of membrane is used what is the material etc. The only info I have
found thus far was from Yoshinori SAWAE and Teruo MURAKAMI. If you have any
other information, know of articles written or someone I could contact
regarding this matter, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your
time. I'll be sure to post any info I receive.

Dear Brandie,

It depends a lot on what is the research question you are addressing.
If you are looking at corrosion of coupled surfaces or wear, you
cannot neglect the effect of the fluids. Conversly, if you are
looking at phenomena such as load transfer or static failure, in
most cases you can neglect the effect of the fluids.

I design prosthetic hips, and am required to test the hip stems according to
ISO 7206, which calls out the testing to be done in a fluid test medium
which is a solution of analytical grade sodium chloride, (NaCl = 9g/l),
continuously aerated, in distilled or deionized water of grade 3 as
specified in ISO 3696.

Hi Brandie,

If you mean testing of total joint replacement materials, they are usually
packaged in sterile bags inside of which is placed about 16 ounces of bovine
serum. This is fairly standard.

If you mean, prosthetics, then I don't think I can help.

Hi Brandie

I'm working with a group researching the wear of UHMWPE as it relates to
total knee prostheses, and we also have found that there is a grey area
regarding appropriate lubrication.

ISO standard 14243 (test protocol for TKRs) specifies diluted bovine serum
with protein content within a fairly wide range (I don't have the numbers
at my fingertips). There is also some discussion within the community
about whether it is necessary to add EDTA and bactericide and fungicide to
the solution. The answer to this latter question seems to depend on
whether you are an engineer (and can't keep anything sterile) or a
bioscientist (and sterility is a matter of course)

The attached .pdf file includes a really short version of the lubricant
recipe that we are using. If you decide you like our recipe, let me know
and I'll get you more details.

There are lots of papers discussing lubricant effects on UHMWPE wear, and a
standard search using "UHMWPE", "wear" as keywords should turn up a bunch.
