View Full Version : gimbal lock

I would like to understand clearly, so I can teach others, what is meant by the "gimbal lock" problem associated with the Grood & Suntay (1983) method for describing joint angles. Why is the mathematical singularity called "gimbal lock"? (Diagrams would be most welcome!) I've spent many hours at the wheel at sea, holding a course while staring at a gimballed compass, but I don't know what gimbal lock is. If I got a set of gimbals from a marine supply store - for example a gimballed cup holder - could I use it to demonstrate gimbal lock to myself and others?

Thank you.
