Please post the following ad for a Research Director of the Orthopaedic &
Arthritic Institute:

Applications are invited for the position of Research Director of the
Orthopaedic and Arthritic Institute (Musculoskeletal Program) at Sunnybrook
and Women's College Health Sciences Centre (S&W) in Toronto, Canada, fully
affiliated with the University of Toronto. The Musculoskeletal Program is
one of five Clinical Service Priorities, along with Cancer, Heart &
Circulation, Perinatal and Gynaecology, and Trauma, each of which has
developed strong research foci under the leadership of their respective

Each Clinical Service Priority interfaces with the Research Institute at
Sunnybrook and Women's which is supported and organized through four
disciplines, Clinical Epidemiology, Clinical Integrative Biology, Imaging,
and Molecular and Cell Biology. The Research Institute currently supports
in excess of $50 million per year of research activity within 200,000 sq.
ft. of state-of-the-art research space located on the Bayview Campus.

The Orthopaedic and Arthritic Institute researchers have established
expertise across the research disciplines, but focused primarily in clinical
evaluative sciences. Other specific areas of focus include bioengineering
and practice-based research. There is strength in the fields of
degenerative arthritis, osteoporosis, skeletal metastases, and
musculoskeletal injury (including rehabilitation). Research is conducted by
an interdisciplinary team, involving orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists,
scientists, physical and occupational therapists, and nurses. The breadth
and quality of the research being conducted is facilitated by access to a
large specialized clinical population.

The Research Director will be expected to develop a research vision and
strategic plan, create an environment that stimulates and supports research,
identify resource needs and coordinate infrastructure support, and work with
the Hospital Foundation, donors, and the community to raise the profile of
and funding for musculoskeletal research. The Research Director is
accountable to the Orthopaedic and Arthritic Institute Program Chief and
S&W's Vice-President of Research, and will interface with the medical
department/division heads, as well as the professional leaders of the other
health professions whose members practice within the Program.

Possessing evident leadership ability, strong communication skills, and the
ability to establish relationships with key academic and health-care
constituencies, the successful candidate will be an experienced
musculoskeletal researcher with vision, a progressive outlook for research,
and a record of distinguished scholarly achievement and peer reviewed funded
