"Bone Reinforcement in the Osteoporotic Spine"

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Orthopaedic Biomechanics group at the M.E. Mueller Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics, University of Bern. The group comprises a multi-disciplinary research team focusing on spine biomechanics, with research in the areas of orthopaedic implant evaluation, computational biomechanics (finite element analysis) and the development of new techniques for orthopaedic surgery. The successful applicant will join a project aimed at improving the technique of bone augmentation for the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures in the spine ("vertebroplasty"). Through an interdisciplinary approach, we will examine ways to improve the current materials used for bone augmentation, determine the optimal strategies for reinforcing compromised structures and restoring normal function, optimise the equipment used for delivering the augmentation materials, and critically evaluate the outcome of augmentation procedures. Research will include laboratory testing and computational modelling.

The position is available immediately. Candidates with an MSc or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science or a closely related field should apply. Experience with any of the following would be a distinct advantage: mechanical testing equipment and procedures, Labview, CAD and FEM software and image analysis. Knowledge of the German language is not required but would be advantageous. Funding is available for three years.

Interested candidates should send their resumes with references and school transcripts to:
