PhD Assistantships in Sports Science

Department of Physical Education, Sport & Leisure Studies
The University of Edinburgh

Support for study towards a PhD in Sport Science in the area of ‘Learn to
Swim’ – To commence October, 2003.

The University of Edinburgh is seeking two researchers in the area of
‘Learn to Swim’. Each of the successful applicants will pursue a PhD in
that area of study.

Support to the value of £6,165 per year will be provided to conduct the
research. As part of their duties the successful applicant will be
expected to work 6 hours for a private learn to swim company (Swimming
Nature Limited). Support would increase to a maximum of £9,040 if working
an extra 5 hours per week for Swimming Nature Limited outside of normal
university hours. The local component of fees will also be covered for a
period of three years (subject to satisfactory progress). For applicants
from the European Union this represents full coverage of fees. Some
assistance may also be available to facilitate attendance at conferences
and other professional development activities.

Applicants should normally have, or be about to obtain, a 1st class or 2.1
honours degree or masters in a relevant discipline. The department will
consider applicants whose first degrees are in a variety of subjects, as
long as these provide a background appropriate to the proposed research
topic in the area of ‘learn to swim’.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Professor Ross Sanders on +44 131
