Development of a constitutive model for the peridontal ligament using a novel motion analysis technique

Research Assistant

Cardiff School of Engineering

A graduate engineer is required to develop a novel testing device for the measuring tooth movement under loading using motion capture equipment and computer controlled loading and data logging systems.
They will then use this to carry out a clinical trial to investigate the mechanical properties of the periodontal ligament.
All mechanical testing data will then be collated to provide input for a second researcher based at UWCM who will be developing mathematical models of the periodontal ligament.

The applicant must have a good degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject and must be able to demonstrate mechanical design skills. Computer literacy and software development skills are essential

Some practical engineering design experience would be desirable as would a keen interest in biomechanical engineering and some basic experience of using motion capture techniques to analyse human movement.

More importantly, the associate must be able to plan and run the project and to work both independently and as part of a cross-disciplinary team.
Enthusiasm, ingenuity and problem solving abilities will be essential.

The project is for three years fixed term and the applicant will be expected to enrol for a PhD on commencement of the post.

The starting salary will be 20,311
All applications must be received by 11th June 2003.
