Paul,

It is depending on the Medical Image Processing package that you use to extract
the geometrical information of the image slices. Mimics and Simplant from
Materialise are the good ones for extracting the geometrical information. There
are two ways that you can get the IGES contours from image slices

(i) to use threasholding techniques to extract the boudary of the ROI (region
of interest), then you can export this contours in the form of IGES (MIMICS
software can do it very well). This approach gives a lot of noise on the iges
contours and it takes time to format the contours for latter CAD processing
steps.

(ii) to generate 3D models of the ROI, then exporting this model in the form of
STL or VRML format. After that, you can use the slicing software such as Magic
RP to slice the 3D model. Finally you can convert this slice data in to the
IGES or DXF or ...contours. Slicing the STL and VRML model can also easily done
in the Reverse Engineering packages such as Surfacer, Copy CAD and Geomagics.
