NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY is seeking a faculty member for a joint, tenure
track position in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical
Engineering in the area of tissue-material interfaces for neural
engineering. Possible specialties include, but are not limited to,
cell-material interactions, patterned growth and study of experimental
neural networks, neural tissue engineering, biocompatibility of neural
implants, and brain-machine interfaces. The two departments supervise
approximately 160 graduate students, and graduate approximately 100
undergraduates per year from their ABET-accredited programs. The faculty
member will also have extensive contact with the research and clinical
personnel at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, a leading research
hospital and a longtime partner of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical
Engineering at Northwestern. The successful candidate will become part of a
new education and research initiative in neural engineering at Northwestern
University, funded in part by a Whitaker Foundation Special Opportunity
Award. A number of additional hires are planned as we build a strong
nucleus in the area of neural engineering with particular emphasis on the
restoration of human function. Rank of the current opening is dependent
upon qualifications. The candidate must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree
and a solid background in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering or
a related area. Applicants should also have the ability to establish an
independently funded research program and have a strong commitment to
teaching in the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Departments of
Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. The starting date for the position
is September 1, 2004. Application materials consisting of a resume, a
statement of research and teaching interests, and the names, addresses and
telephone numbers of at least three references should be sent to: Prof. Rod
