A Three year Post Doc position in the Structure and Motion Lab at the Royal Veterinary College is available immediately to work on a BBSRC funded project "mechanics of limb protraction in cursorial animals"

The project will use a combination of experimental measurement (forceplate and motion analysis, in vitro mechanical testing) and computer simulation (SIMM) to study how dogs and horses achieve rapid limb protraction under varying locomotor conditions. The paper can be downloaded from www.rvc.ac.uk/sml. A background in one or more of the above techniques, engineering or robotics is required. Start date 1st February 2004 or as soon as possible after that date.

The lab is based on two sites, animal based studies are undertaken at the Royal Veterinary College, Hawkshead Campus (20 miles north of London) and human based studies are undertaken in the University College London Centre for Human Performance at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore. Both Colleges are part of the University of London. Alan Wilson holds a joint appointment between the two institutions and our research is integrated across the two sites. Other faculty members in the lab are Rachel Payne, John Hutchinson and James Wakeling. The appointee would be based at the Royal Veterinary College but would be expected to attend the CHP for some aspects of their work.

The RVC biomechanics laboratory is sited adjacent to the equine and small animal hospitals and facilities include 500Hz ProReflex 3D motion analysis system, Kistler 9287BA forceplate with installations in rubber, concrete and tarmac runways and in an indoor jumping arena, Sato high speed (15ms-1) equine treadmill, Instron servo-hydraulic loading equipment, National Instruments data logging hardware and LabView software, horse shoeing forge, mechanical workshop. There is also a muscle mechanics lab equipped for the studies of muscle contraction both in vitro and in vivo, with two Aurora muscle motors. Other software packages include Matlab, MathCad, SIMM, Labview, Maple and Statistica.

The Centre of Human Performance is sited on the grounds of the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore (part of University College London). Facilities at the IHP include a motion analysis lab equipped with three MPX30 CODA motion analysis systems, twin AMTI forceplates, a KinCom isokinetic dynamometer and a ten channel telemetric EMG set-up. The Centre carries out research and teaching related to human movement in all its forms.

The work in the two labs is coordinated to enable us to share resources, personnel and equipment. This also makes it easy to undertake projects that include comparative studies on both human and animal subjects. This enables a wider range of techniques to be applied to aid our understanding of basic physiological mechanisms in locomotion in humans and other animals.

Ongoing research projects in the labs include:
Mechanics and control of elastic energy storage for economical locomotion.
Muscle function and control during locomotion in man and other animals.
Role of muscles in damping of musculoskeletal vibration.
The mechanical basis of musculoskeletal injury and its treatment by corrective shoeing.
The effect of horseshoe material on distal interphalangeal joint moments and the attenuation of impact energy.
Evaluation of different repair techniques for cranial cruciate rupture in the dog.
Design constraints on locomotion in massive animals ie dinosaurs and elephants.

Salary will be from 21,010 p.a. plus 2134 per annum London Allowance (RA1A) dependent on qualifications and experience. The employer contributes to a pension fund and a yearly increment is paid on anniversary of appointment.
