PhD studentships in human balance, gait and falls research:

SAFE FOOTWEAR AND WALKING SURFACES

Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute
University of Wollongong, Australia.

We are seeking highly motivated graduates to apply for two 3-year PhD
scholarships to investigate the biomechanics of slips and trips, and to develop
guidelines for the design of safe footwear to maximise stability in older
people. The two successful applicants will work on collaborative projects, with
one based primarily with the Falls and Balance Research Group at the Prince of
Wales Medical Research Institute and the other in the Biomechanics Research
Laboratory at the University of Wollongong. This research is part of
the "Prevention of Older People's Injuries" program (POPI;
http://www.powmri.edu.au/POPI) funded under the National Health and Medical
Research Council (NHMRC) Partnership in Injury program. The POPI program
involves six different research projects related to falls, with the objective
to develop identify risk factors and intervention strategies to reduce falls
and falls-related injuries in older people. The successful applicants will
participate in projects that investigate safe footwear and walking surfaces.

Suitable candidates will have:
Essential criteria:
-Honours degree (at least 2nd Class) or Masters degree in a relevant
biomechanics, engineering or applied science discipline.
-Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
-Previous research experience working with human subjects
-Strong quantitative and experimental skills
Desirable criteria:
-Experience in design and construction
-Research experience in the biomechanics of footwear design and falls
prevention
-Proficient knowledge of human anatomy and physiology

The PhD scholarships offer an annual stipend of AUD$18,484 (tax free), for a
period of three years, commencing in 2004. There is also a provision for
relocation and thesis allowance. Stipends and allowances are indexed
annually.

The Falls and Balance Research Group (http://www.powmri.edu.au/FBRG), headed by
Associate Professor Stephen Lord and situated at the Prince of Wales Medical
Research Institute, conducts research into understanding human balance, fall
risk factors and strategies for prevention of falls in older people. The Prince
of Wales Medical Research Institute (http://www.powmri.edu.au) is situated on
the Prince of Wales Hospital site, adjacent to the Medical School of the
University of New South Wales. The Institute has rapidly grown to become one
of the largest aggregates of research on the brain and nervous system in
Australia, with a staff and research student complement of over one hundred.
The Institute is accredited by the NHMRC as an independent research institute
in New South Wales. The Institute's proximity to the Hospital and the
University is conducive to its close clinical and academic ties with these
organisations and the its convenient location in Randwick, in Sydney's eastern,
suburbs allows easy access to all amenities, including shopping centres, parks,
beaches (e.g. Coogee and the world-famous Bondi Beach), the city centre and
international and domestic airports.

The Biomechanics Research Laboratory (BRL), headed by Associate Professor Julie
Steele is located within the Department of Biomedical Science at the University
of Wollongong (http://www.uow.edu.au/health/mrc/brl). The laboratory includes
a collective of keen researchers who have a particular interest in applied
biomechanical research, predominantly focusing on mechanisms of lower extremity
dysfunction and strategies to prevent injury. Current research interests in the
BRL include developing prevention of strategies for anterior cruciate ligament
injury and patellar tendinosis during dynamic landings, footwear and falls,
breast movement and brassiere design, muscle strain injuries and neuromuscular
control, and obesity and functional performance. The University of Wollongong
(http://www.uow.edu.au) is a University of international standing located just
80 km south of Sydney on a spectacular stretch of the southern New South Wales
coast.
