Evidence suggests that early intervention during the initial stages of
osteoarthritis in young (less than 65
years) patients using more conservative devices may delay the need for total
knee replacement. Advantages
of early intervention include; minimal joint destruction; retention of
functional cruciate ligaments and prevention
of further disease progression. The primary aim of this joint project with
the University of Leeds and DePuy
International is to design and develop a number of novel design solutions
for a replacement of either the
medial or lateral compartment of the tibio-femoral joint. The aim of the
Southampton arm of the work is to
develop a virtual (finite element analysis) knee model to assess the
interaction of minimally invasive devices
with the remaining anatomical structures. We aim to use the model not only
to assess the performance of the
prosthetic devices, but also their impact on the remaining bony and soft
tissue structures. The work will build
on the existing models of the knee, which are currently in development at
Southampton.

Applicants are expected to hold at least a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering
or equivalent discipline and a
PhD in a relevant area. A working knowledge of finite element analysis is
essential and in particular explicit
finite element formulations. Additional knowledge of biomechanics,
particularly related to total knee joint
replacement, would be advantageous.

Salary scale: 18,893-24,097, Research Grade 1A. This is a fixed term post
for 2 years.
