If perhaps, perchange the reader of this post has not heard of BIOSIS,
their website should explain much about a critically important publisher,
indexer and content provider in the fields of the biosciences in the form
of print indexes and online databases. Biological Abstracts is the most
known print index of biology articles and research publications published
by BIOSIS and the database BIOSIS is the most important database provided by
the BIOSIS organization.

BIOSIS

"Influenza

The World Health Organization estimates that up to half a million deaths
are caused by the flu each year, with new strains of flu viruses
constantly testing researchers' ability to create effective vaccines.
BIOSIS databases are ideal for this type of research, with in-depth
coverage of the many fields that contribute to flu research, including
epidemiology, immunology, infectious diseases, molecular genetics, public
health, and virology.

A search of the BIOSIS databases for information on flu yields 44,447
relevant results from hundreds of journals, meetings, and reports from
all over the world."

"BIOSIS is a non-profit organization that delivers flexible information
services including databases and customized information products to the
global life sciences community.

What BIOSIS does

Selects Documents from thousands of sources worldwide

Indexes and abstracts them into citations which describe their content

Maintains Databases for searching citations - adding more than 600,000 new
entries each year"

"BIOSIS databases are the most complete resource for finding life sciences
information.

BIOSIS databases are

Interdisciplinary
BIOSIS databases integrate important subjects from many different fields
all across biology.

International
More than 90 nations are represented in BIOSIS databases.

Easy to Search
BIOSIS databases use a unique indexing system that allows flexible,
efficient searching.

Informed by Diverse Sources
You can find citations for articles, meetings, patents, book chapters, and

"BIOSIS Previews contains citations from Biological Abstracts (BA), and
Biological Abstracts/Reports, Reviews, and Meetings (BA/RRM) (formerly
BioResearch Index), the major publications of BIOSIS. Together, these
publications constitute the major English- language service providing
comprehensive worldwide coverage of research in the biological and
biomedical sciences. Biological Abstracts includes approximately 350,000
accounts of original research yearly from nearly 5,000 primary journal
and monograph titles. Biological Abstracts/RRM includes an additional
200,000+ citations a year from meeting abstracts, reviews, books, book

Thomson buys Biosis publishing
Proceeds in the sale of assets of the Philadelphia-based nonprofit
research service will go to a new foundation.
By Linda Loyd
Inquirer Staff Writer

Thomson Corp. said yesterday that it had acquired the publishing assets of
Philadelphia-based Biological Abstracts Inc. and Biosis, a life-sciences
indexing service.

Toronto-based Thomson, with $7.8 billion in revenue in 2002, is a
publisher of specialized information for businesses, with more than 20
million users in the fields of law, tax, accounting, financial services,
higher education, reference information, corporate training, scientific
research, and health care. Thomson's products range from Westlaw legal
databases and the Physicians' Desk Reference to university textbooks.

Thomson ISI, which was founded in Philadelphia in 1958 as the Institute
for Scientific Information, provides Web-based information to researchers,
students and businesses worldwide.

Biosis announced in May that it was seeking a partner to ensure that
researchers, educators, students and others would have continued
affordable access to biological research. In October, Biosis said it was
in final negotiations with Thomson.

Thompson acquisition of BIOSIS:

A shorter URL for the above link:

Founded in 1926, BIOSIS is the non-profit organization that produces vital
databases and services for life sciences research, including Biological
Abstracts, BIOSIS Previews, and Zoological Record. These databases are
made available globally on a wide variety of platforms. The board of
BIOSIS will continue to support their new mission under the interim name
of The J.R.S. Foundation.

Thomson ISI was selected from a number of potential strategic partners
following a detailed review process by the BIOSIS Board. After considering
both not-for-profit and for-profit organizations, the Board concluded that
Thomson ISI is in a unique position - to facilitate the understanding of
the living world by helping researchers, educators, students and others
access information relevant to the life sciences.

"We were delighted with the BIOSIS Board's decision. The acquisition of
BIOSIS is in keeping with the Thomson vision to be the leading global
provider of integrated information solutions to business and professional
customers," said Mike Tansey, Chief Executive Officer of Thomson
Scientific. "The integration of the BIOSIS content with the other Thomson
Scientific information resources augments the total information solutions
we provide to the scientific community."

The BIOSIS information services will become part of Thomson ISIa business
unit of Thomson Scientific and Healthcare. The BIOSIS product line will be
integrated within ISI Web of KnowledgeSMthe multidisciplinary information
solution that facilitates discovery by offering seamless navigation to the
highest quality content, evaluation tools, and bibliographic management
products.
