PhD Scholarship In Motor Control

Health and Sports Science

School of Medical Sciences

Opportunities exist for highly motivated science or engineering
graduates to contribute to an ARC funded research program in the field
of human motor control. The successful applicant/s will be expected to
have experience and research interests in areas relevant to a project
entitled " The implications of resistance training for the control of
movement", and will work in close collaboration with the Chief
Investigator, Dr. Tim Carroll.

The primary objective of this project is to generate basic knowledge
about the impact of resistance training exercises on nervous system
function. It is anticipated that the research will also yield practical
information relevant to the design of injury prevention and
rehabilitation programs. The main experimental techniques that will be
employed include fine wire and surface electromyography (EMG),
transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulation (TMS & TES), and
peripheral nerve stimulation.

Essential Criteria: The successful applicant/s will have an honours or
masters degree in exercise science, physiology, neuroscience,
engineering or related discipline, and a strong background in human
motor control, neurophysiology, or biomechanics. Solid information
processing skills are expected (i.e. detailed understanding of the
Windows operating system, capacity for sophisticated use of word
processing, spreadsheet and drawing packages). Excellent written and
verbal communication skills are essential.

Desirable Criteria: An interest in resistance training. Prior experience
with electromyography and peripheral or transcranial stimulation.
Capacity for software development in the Matlab and Labview
environments. Experience in signal processing.

Salary: $17,609 pa (tax exempt).

Preferred starting date: As soon as possible.

Duration of positions: funding is available for up to 3 years, with a
possibility of further extension.
