MECHANICS IN MEDICINE AND BIOLOGY NETWORK

12pm Wednesday 1st. until 2.30pm Thursday 2nd. September 2004

at The University of Birmingham

Organisers: Dr Cathy Holt and Dr Sam Evans (Cardiff University)

Dr Anthony Bull (Imperial College)
Dr Mark Taylor (University of Southampton)
Dr Ashraf Khir (Brunel University)

An informal seminar for young researchers providing:

* A national forum to present their research without focusing on the clinical application
* Share techniques and technologies within the United Kingdom biological mechanics community
* An opportunity to find out what others are doing within the large field of mechanics applied to medicine and biology
* A chance to get to know others and networking for future conferences and collaborations
* Enhance the standing of this important area of research within the U.K.
* Strengthen Industrial/Academic links
* Present a forum for debate
* A sociable atmosphere suitable for all
* Arrive and leave at noon to ensure enough time for travel
* Conference, dinner and accommodation in the same location to give opportunity for informal contacts
* Low registration fee (140 incl. refreshments, lunches, dinner and accommodation) to ensure everybody can attend

Format of Student Abstracts and Presentation - as follows:

An A4 page ABSTRACT must be submitted (by email: d.e.shepherd@bham.ac.uk ) including the following titles:
Introduction to the problem or Study: keep it brief
Methods: list standard techniques and explain new and novel methods of interest
Points for discussion: you are encouraged to recognise your achievements and limitations and ask for help and input from others

PRESENTATIONS will follow the same format with the aim of providing a friendly, informal atmosphere in which to encourage PhD students and recently completed PhDs to present their work, communicate with others and give and receive constructive advice.
* Later stage PhD / Early PD presentations 20 minutes
* Early stage PhD presentations 15 minutes

Presenter should be sole author with acknowledgements as required
