CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY - Department of Materials & Medical Sciences

Post-Doctoral Research Assistant

19,659 - 23,983 per annum

Fixed Term for 2 Years

A 2 year Post-Doctoral Research Assistantship is currently available in
our Department as part of an EPSRC funded project to work on the
structure and properties of human bones for forensic purposes.

The four most important attributes that a forensic anthropologist is
called to answer are age, sex, stature and ethnic background. Accurate
estimation of 'age at death', in particular, is very important in
forensic anthropological cases and in some archaeological cases because
there may be consequences of incorrect identification. Determination of
age at death is notoriously difficult where the age of the subject is
more than 30 years. The problem of accurate estimation of age at death
is aggravated where the corpse has suffered extensive damage or
fragmentation and in many cases, it may not be possible to determine the
age better than 'mature adult'.
Researchers at Cranfield University's Shrivenham campus have developed
and patented an analytical technique, which promises accuracy of age
estimation to +/- 2 years. It requires only a small sample, and is
based on laboratory analyses and it is at least as fast as current
methods. The RA1A will work in a 2-year research programme in
collaboration with major forensic centres and forensic agencies to fully
develop the method in its finer details and applications.

Candidates should possess a PhD in a biomechanical or biomaterials
related subject and if possible have a basic knowledge of bone structure
and properties.

Timetable for applications:

Closing date for applications is July 10th and interviews will be held
in the period July 15th-20th. The position is available from 1st Sept
2004 and the applicant is expected to take up the position shortly after
this date.
