One Full Time Clinician-Scientist Position Available

Criteria:

· Candidate must be U.S. Citizen or non-citizen national admitted for
permanent residence per the granting agency guidelines.
· Physician who has completed an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program
and has successfully completed Part I of the ABOS.
· Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Ohio.
· Meets criteria for Staff appointment to the CCF.
· A two-year commitment for basic-science or clinical outcomes research
training in an area of clinical interest to the trainee.

Benefits and expectations:

· For those clinician-scientists just out of residency training, the
Department will offer a 1-year clinical fellowship at the Cleveland
Clinic in one of the several subspecialty areas listed below that will
be coordinated with the basic science program.
· A salary of $75,000 during year 1, $85,000 during the second year and
$95,000 the third year will be offered. (Salary is correlated with
clinical activity as defined below). The Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery will supplement with an additional $20,000 in funding for
supplies and equipment over the 3 years of training.
· The trainee will be appointed as a member of the clinical staff with
clinical privileges at the Cleveland Clinic, with the capacity to
independently evaluate and treat patients in the area of their coupled
basic science and clinical research.
· Year 1: The primary responsibility will be clinical training in one of
six areas of coupled clinical-basic science specially designed for the
clinician-scientist (see below). During this clinical fellowship year,
there will be training and weekly mentoring in clinical care and in
developing clinical outcome studies that will closely parallel the basic
science training that will follow in the next two years. During this
year courses will be offered in; statistical analysis and grant writing,
an 18-week course on the introduction to clinical research, and a
16-week clinical research management course through the Cleveland Clinic
Lerner College of Medicine. As a physician with limited privileges, the
fellow will be able to bill as a first surgical assistant when a
resident is not available. He/she is capable of admitting patients and
undertaking primary responsibility for both out-patient and in-patent
care.
· Year 2 and 3: The clinician-scientist will be given a full clinical
appointment and will have one day per week dedicated to this type of
clinical activity. During this time, the trainee will have a
limited outpatient and surgical practice and will generate clinical
income to supplement the research salary, as noted above, and fulfill
the requirements to take part II of the ABOS 2 years after completion of
their clinical training. The trainee will be given secretarial and a
nurse clinician support through the clinical section in which their
research area is supported. It is anticipated that the trainee will
spend a minimum of 40 hours per week (10 hours four days per week)
during “prime” hours of the normal workweek in the laboratory.
· The clinician-scientist will be part of a highly developed and
integrated collaborative process in the Orthopaedic Research Center,
which offers excellent mentoring in both basic science and clinical
practice. The clinician-scientist in training will be partnered with a
full-time staff clinician-scientist who has a clinical practice closely
related to the area of basic-science research of interest. The senior
clinician-scientist will 1) mentor the trainee in the development of a
balanced career in clinical care and research 2) work with the basic
science research team to develop a coupled basic-science and
clinical-research program for the trainee 3) mentor and assist the
trainee in a limited clinical practice oriented to clinical outcomes and
clinical trials in the area of the basic-science program.
· The clinician-scientist will have the opportunity to have the
assistance of their mentors and the scientific and clinical directors of
this NIH grant, Drs. Cavanagh and Iannotti, to assist each trainee in
securing an academic position and application for funding through the
NIH and OREF career development process.
