View Full Version : BIG Problem - service suspended

06-05-2005, 08:47 PM
Dear Colleagues:
the human stupidity is apparently unlimited. Staring from last
Friday the BEL Repository is suspended until new a date to be defined.

This thanks to a few smart boys that, probably using some sort of
download manager to maximise the download bandwidth, are in practice
performing a denial of service attack to our web server.

the last happy smart boy on Thursday launched simultaneously:
- 28 download of Composite_Femur_3rd_gen_v2/3rdgenCFv2_1.zip
- 42 download of FEM_Head/forISB.zip

After we added a limit to the number of simultaneous download a
single user could run, these smart boys started to use a scheme which
swaps userID and IP number to avoid this limit. At this point
Rizzoli webmaster, who has many other problems above BEL, decided to
stop the download demon until a solution is found.

It may be that these people are in good faith using tools they do not
know and understand, but this does not change the substance of the
problem. In a period where we are struggling to maintain this
service, for which we failed so far to receive any financial support
from any agency, having to fight also against these problems
overwhelmed us. I am not sure we want to continue.

If anybody has a technical solution to circumvent this problem please
let me and I shall pass it to our webmaster.

In the meanwhile the BEL Repository will remain off line. We are
waiting to hear about yet another grant application we submitted to
the European Commission in the last call. We should know about it in
a couple of week. If the proposal will be accepted we shall have the
money to pay a professional that will set-up a dedicated web server
for the BEL, the Living Human project and all these initiatives. If
it is rejected once again, we shall be forced to re-consider the
future of this initiative.

Opinions and comments are welcome.

Regards from a disappointed Marco
