PhD Studentship in Spinal Biomechanics and Performance of Rowers

Departments of Musculoskeletal Surgery and Bioengineering

Applications are invited for a three-year PhD studentship funded by
British International Rowing and UKSport in Spinal Biomechanics and
Performance of Rowers. The project will be jointly supervised by Dr
Alison McGregor of the Department of Musculoskeletal Surgery and Dr
Anthony Bull of the Bioengineering Department. These departments have
both received the highest research rating (5*) in the most recent
Research Assessment Exercise. The successful applicant will work closely
with the funding bodies.

The BioDynamics Research Group at Imperial College has been
investigating aspects of back pain, performance and injury of rowers.
This project has reached an advanced stage with specialised
instrumentation, data acquisition systems and models of spinal function.
British International Rowing and UKSport are keen to employ the research
tools developed at Imperial College to understand the mechanism of the
rowing stroke with a view to identifying biomechanical factors relating
to performance. This project will include:

* measuring kinematics and kinetics of rowing on an ergometer and
obtaining measures of muscle function
(www.bg.ic.ac.uk/Research/biodynamics)
* investigating factors that influence the above, for example,
flexibility and fatigue
* apply the data above to mathematical models of spinal function.
* apply findings to modify and develop training programmes.

Applicants should have relevant experience of biomechanics, sports
science and human performance. Because of the breadth of skills
required, some of which the applicant will have to develop, the
applicant should be highly personally motivated, with the ability to
study independently. In addition, the application should be an
exceptional communicator able to work together with a larger team. This
larger team includes the Imperial College academic team as well as the
British International Rowing coaching and medical team.

A stipend and fees will be awarded. Students must satisfy the
eligibility criteria, including UK or EU residence for three or more
years. For further details of the post please contact Dr Alison McGregor
on +44 20 83838831 or Dr Anthony Bull on +44 20 7594 5186.

The studentship is available with immediate effect and applicants should
register their interest by sending an up-to-date curriculum vitae to Dr
Anthony Bull at a.bull@imperial.ac.uk, and by submitting an application
form (which can be downloaded from http://www.imperial.ac.uk/pgoptions).

Closing date : 7th October 2005
