Organization:University of Pennsylvania
Location:Philadelphia, PA

The McKay Orthopedic Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania
is currently seeking a full-time Research Engineer specializing in
biomechanics. We are currently accepting applications for this immediate
opening and will continue until the position is filled.

Our laboratory conducts interdisciplinary studies on soft connective
tissues. We perform mechanical tests and computational models utilizing
human cadaveric tissue and animal models. Our research is funded by NIH
grants and industrial support. The candidate will participate in basic
science research to investigate intervertebral disc mechanics, explore
mechanisms that lead to initiation and progression of disc degeneration,
and test new technologies in the treatment of disc degeneration.

Job Description:
The position entails working with the lab's diverse group of individuals
including engineering faculty, surgeons, undergraduate and graduate
engineering students, medical students, and surgical residents. The
individual will work on various aspects of orthopaedic research projects,
including conducting mechanical tests of biologic tissue, collection and
analysis of data, image analysis, and manuscript preparation. The duties
will include development of custom-made instruments, including motion
control and force-displacement data acquisition. The research engineer
will also be responsible for training and mentoring students and surgical
residents in biomechanical experiments and will help manage laboratory
materials and resources.

Candidates with BS or MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering,
or related Engineering disciplines with a particularly strong background in
mechanics are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in biomechanical
testing, data acquisition, instrumentation, Matlab software, and
computational analysis is highly desirable. Strong organizational and
technical skills, good oral communication skills, and the ability to work
