Information

Founded in 1893 as a Land Grant University, Montana State University is
composed of eight academic colleges and two divisions and boasts a
friendly, supportive faculty and campus environment. Currently, the
university hosts an enrollment of over 12,000 students, including
approximately 1,000 graduate students. MSU is located in Bozeman, an
extended community of about 40,000 nestled in the Rocky Mountains in
southwest Montana. With an annual budget in excess of $350 million,
including research activity of $100 million, Montana State University
provides an excellent environment for undergraduate and graduate
education as well as opportunities for productive research and creative
activities. The university is listed as Doctoral/Research
University-Intensive in the new Carnegie classification system. In
addition to providing access to an extraordinary ecosystem for teaching
and research programs, Bozeman is renowned for year-round recreational
and cultural opportunities. The local airport is served by four national
airlines.

The city of Bozeman boasts high quality medical facilities, very low
crime rate, many fine restaurants, acclaimed public and private schools,
a symphony orchestra and choir, ballet and opera. Skiing Magazine
identified Bozeman, with three major ski areas within an hour's drive,
as the fourth top US skiing town in its September 2004 Magazine. The
K-12 educational system, growing reputation of Montana State University,
and pristine natural environment of the area combine to make Bozeman one
of America's most desirable university towns.



Duties and
Responsibilities

The Provost and Faculty of Montana State University invite nominations
and applications for the newly created position of Vice Provost for
Graduate Education. The Vice Provost for Graduate Education will be one
of MSU's senior academic officers, reporting directly to and working
with the Provost. The Vice Provost will be a leading advocate for
graduate education and will be responsible for leading and furthering
the goals of the Division of Graduate Education. The Vice Provost for
Graduate Education will work closely with colleges and departments to
enhance the status of graduate education, which has been identified as a
priority in MSU's Five Year Vision Document
provide
leadership to increase graduate education funding; foster the
development of innovative interdisciplinary programs; cultivate
partnerships with external organizations for the benefit of graduate
education; monitor the quality of graduate programs; and be an advocate
for graduate student success. The Vice Provost will oversee all graduate
programs including those taught by distance delivery.



Required
Qualifications

1.

An earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree.







2.

A record of successful administrative experience in program development,
budget management and staff supervision.







3.

Experience with policy development, implementation and administration.







4.

A record of successful grant activity in research and education.



Preferred
Qualifications

1.

A record of relevant administrative experience in higher education.







2.

A distinguished record of achievement in graduate education.







3.

An understanding of the administration of complex organizations and the
ability to establish interdisciplinary and interinstitutional
partnerships.







4.

Experience with Masters and Ph.D. students and programs as a faculty
member or administrator.







5.

A record of successful experience working with university research
administrators as well as federal, state and corporate executives.

higher education; have the skills necessary to promote graduate
education and build partnerships among university, tribal, local, state,
regional, national, and international constituencies to integrate

open communications; possess a record of commitment to gender, ethnic,
and racial diversity; be committed to shared governance involving
faculty, staff, and students; and the ability to motivate members of the
campus community to achieve and maintain excellence in graduate
education.
