A funded PhD studentship is available in the Sports Biomechanics Research
Group at Loughborough University for a project entitled:

Optimisation of vaulting performance

This research project will investigate optimum techniques in the vault
event of Artistic Gymnastics using a multi-segment torque-driven computer
model
of the human body to simulate the contact with the vaulting table.
Subject-specific strength and inertia data will be obtained on a gymnast
via anthropometric and dynamometer measurements. Three-dimensional
performance data will be obtained using a marker-based motion analysis
system and will
be used in the evaluation of the model prior to application. Optimised
vaulting techniques will be determined together with contributions to
vaulting performance in order to gain an understanding of the mechanics of
elite vaulting technique.


Applicants should have an appropriate background in biomechanics,
mathematics and gymnastics.
