1. PAPERS RECEIVED for Simulation for Emergency Management Conference,
April 11-14, 1994, San Diego.

To show the quality of papers being presented to the Simulation
for Emergency Management Conference, I would like to give a synopsis
of some of the papers.

In one paper, two persons describe a system to aid in building
operation. The system allows person to simulate the air quality in a
building when an emergency condition exist. Due to this simulation,
the building can be modified to improve the air quality in emergen-
cies.

In another paper, 3 persons describe how a simulation can help
improve the effectiveness of relief efforts. With this simulation, the
authors have been able to identify the time, place, and conditions.
Thus, the simulations can be used to make recommendations.

In yet another paper, 1 person describes a method on how to make
emergency management simulations more accurate. With this technique,
the simulation can better model the actual environment.

In these descriptions, there are 6 persons involved in three differ-
ent areas of Simulation for Emergency Management. The first paper
concentrated on a resource. The second paper mentioned concentrated on
a area. Lastly, the third paper mentioned concentrated on a system.

Therefore, simulation for Emergency Management is a big field and
needs everyone who can help. If you would like to submit a paper or
attend the April 11-14, 1994 conference in San Diego please write to:

2. NEW PRODUCTS

Please note -- I am relaying information that I have recived on a
professional basis. I am not affiliated with the companies mentioned.

Recently, I have received a flyer from Powersim(tm) about its
dynamic modeling and simulation package that is available for 386 with
MS-Windows. The program is designed to work in management, industry,
ecology/environment, science, and education and training. To find out

Also, I have received from Elsevier publishing, an announcement
for a new journal. The journal is entitled "Computer Science" which
covers 10 topical areas and 15 fields of endeavor.

Finally, Integrated Systems send me a flyer on the family of
program available through its Matrix X product. The three families are
matrix math for design and analysis, systemBuild for modelling and
simulation, and AutoCode/AC-100 for code generation and rapid proto-
typing.

3. THOUGHTS ON EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - GOALS

In emergency management, it is important to have a goal. A goal
acts a marker and guidepost for someone to navigate to. Thus, no
matter what type of navigation is used, the goal is there for them to
go to.

Based on the Kanecki family writing, a goal was described as
this:
"Health, Vitality, Egotism, Isolation, Education, Experience,
Expertise, Open Mindedness, Skill, Honest, Awareness, Quality, Integ-
rity, Leadership. 'A person who can correlate key details of all into
goals, objectives, and plans, utilizing available or new resources,
using good system management understanding, logic, and decisions will
succeed. Remember, goals also need the involvement of people working
together.'"
