PhD Studentship in Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Cardiovascular
Biomechanics

Dublin City University, Glasnevin, Dublin 9, Ireland.

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in Biomedical Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Cardiovascular Biomechanics. The studentship
will investigate the use of MRI for determining the mechanical properties of
arterial tissue in vivo. Tagged MR imaging is the method that will be
applied to determine the tissue properties. Some experimental validation
will be required using a vessel phantom to develop the technique and
subsequently it will be applied to in vivo arterial deformation
measurements. The method will also require the development of finite element
models and suitable material models. The models will use existing test data
on arteries combined with the tagged MR imaging to determine the mechanical
properties of the tissue in vivo. Some additional tests on arterial tissue
may also be required. Experience in computational and experimental
cardiovascular biomechanics is therefore an advantage.

The project is funded by a Science Foundation Ireland Research Frontiers
Grant and the studentship is available for suitably qualified EU students.
Proficiency in the English language is necessary (see
http://www.dcu.ie/registry/english.shtml for English language requirements).
The studentship includes full payment of fees and a 3-year maintenance grant
(EUR14,500 tax-free per annum). Applications are invited from individuals,
who have a 1st class or upper 2nd class honours degree, or masters, in
Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mechanics, Applied Mathematics or a
related discipline.

All enquiries should be addressed to Dr Caitríona Lally. The studentship is
available from August/September 2006 and applicants should register their
interest as soon as possible by e-mailing an up-to-date curriculum vitae to
Dr Caitríona Lally.
