Dear Colleagues:

Here are the responses to my question.

"I would like to measure foot pressures during take-off and landing of an
athlete. The foot pressure instrument must be light and portable. Can
you please share your experience with different manufacturers?

We have been using the Pedar-X system from Novel for dynamic movement
tasks such as jumping, running, and cutting and have had a good
experience. If you have any specific questions, I would me more than

To address your demand, I would suggest you to have a
look at novel company website which is : www.novel.de
they have this PEDAR system which might be helpful for
your research. As far as I know, it`s light and also
portable as you need.

I work at the VA in Los Angeles. We have been using the Novel PEDAR
system. It is wireless and is very light in weight. The BlueTooth
technology allows us to collect data at various distances. www.novel.de

As part of my senior design project at LeTourneau University we used
pressure sensors made by Tekscan to measure intersegmental pressures in
the knee joint. I know that Tekscan also makes a portable device for
measuring foot pressures. I will enclose Tekscan's website as well as a

I had experience with both tekscan insole pressure measures and pedar
pressure insoles by Novel. The tekscan insoles are very thin and
therefore breakdown while in the shoe of an athlete. I collected some
pilot data initially with them and they fell apart. The Pedar system is
more expensive, but the insoles will wear more slowly. Pedar also sells
the bladder device to be sure that the sensors in the pressure insoles
remain calibrated. I've attached the websites below. I hope this helps.

Perhaps the appropriate system for use in sports is RsScan (3d Plate
0.5m),
because the sampling rate is the highest.

I have seen a paper thin sensor that can measure foot
pressure. It is manufactured by Tekscan. Go to
www.tekscan.com and you would get all the information.
a dynamic vaerion would caost about $25,000.

I measured the plantar pressure of running, jump landing, and some cutting
movement using the Novel Peal System (Germany). A thin insole (~2mm) will
be
inserted into the shoe, and a cable connnect the insole and the dataloger.
The
dataloger will be fixed at the waist by a belt. You can then store data in
the
fresh memory card inside the dataloger or transfer it to the computer
using
bluetooth technology. The company claimed that the tranmission of
bluetooth can
be as far as 50m. And the software for data processing is good, you can
make any
masks dividing the plantar pressure into forefoot, arch, heel. You can
also
displace the result in 2D and 3D, this should be a gd idea for educating
the
athleete, or for presentation.

The drawbacks of this system are:
1) the insole is not durable for explosive movements (sprint, cutting
movement)
2) the samlping frequency is limited: 2 insoles with 50Hz, or, 1 insole
with
100Hz, or, 1 insole (only forefoot or rearfoot) with 200Hz. While other
system,
RSscan, as I remember, can measure up to 500Hz for one insole (check it, I
am
not sure).

I can send you a picture of the system and some snapshots about the
software.

However, I will return to my office at 13 June.

We have done plenty of peak plantar pressure testing in localized areas -
in shoe with the Tekscan system. We have done this mainly to validate our
product (running footwear).

However, I believe this system is not the most valid means of data nor the
most reliable. It is my understanding that it is used more in clinical
settings (diabetes clinics, etc.) as opposed to research labs.

We are currently looking to purchase a new system in order to better our
data. We have been looking at both RSscan and Novel. Both have a mobile
system which it sounds like you need. Also, both of these systems I
believe are much more accepted in the research/lab world.

I suggent Nobel system is better than F-scan system considering using

I am working at the Center for Human Movement Sciences of
the University of Groningen (Holland) as a PhD student on
the mechanical determinants of the Jumper's knee in
volleyball athletes.

In a search for ambulant measurement devices I have set up
an experiment with RS scan pressure soles to determine
vertical ground reaction forces during take of and landing
from a real volleyball jump during practise.

During balance tasks and normal walking these pressure
soles are well validated and are used at our orhtopeadic
clinic.
But during these extensive movements with high forces with
gigantic loading rates the soles were simply too fragile.
Concluding that these pressure soles are not suitable for
these movements.

I have executed this study 3 years ago, so it might be
that they developed more robust soles, but I don't know.

At the moment colleagues are cooperating with a
orthopeadic surgeon who says has developed a more robust
and very accurate pressure sole for more athletic
movements like running. We haven't seen this soles so far,
but planned to do validation studies. I will let you know
if there are any results (please contact me if I forget).

I am a master student from the Laboratory of Biomechanicis of the movement
and human posture - University of São Paulo, Brazil.
We are sutudying foot pressures using the Pedar from Novel and one of my
collegues are going to start the analyses with runners and a few months
ago we started to acquire the datas for walking using the instrument pedar
inside a bagpack. The subjects refer that this procedment is very
confortable and we have much attention in let the bag close to the body to
avoid changes in gravity centre of the body.
the Pedar is very light and it has the option of do the acquisitions with
the equipament in the belt, however we like this way with the bag. You
must pay attention to put something to protect the pedar inside the bag
due to the fact that it may move (shake) inside and so demaging the
equipament. I am sending you a picture of the subject using the bag.
Another advantage of the PedAR is the fact of it has the bluetooth so data
are transmitted via wireless for the PC. so, the subject has only the
cables that link the amplifier(box) to th insoles.
