EPSRC-badged PhD Studentship

Biomechanical and biomaterial aspects of impact injuries

Applications are invited for an EPSRC-badged PhD studentship for a collaborative project between the Schools of Engineering and Dentistry, Cardiff University, on the biomechanics of impact injuries, to start January 2007.

The project will build on previous work in the School of Engineering on hip fractures, using and improving a test rig developed in conjunction with Imperial College and the working group developing European standards for hip protector testing. The Dental School have particular expertise in artificial soft tissue materials, and a key aim of the project will be to develop realistic soft tissue simulants, which are vital in understanding and predicting hip fractures. The system will then be further developed to investigate facial impact injuries. The project will involve a mixture of impact simulator tests, material testing and computational modelling.

Applicants should have a good first degree (2.1 or above) in mechanical engineering, materials or a related subject, and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for experimental research and good communication skills. Experience of finite element modelling would also be useful. The successful applicant will be highly motivated and capable of working independently and managing a complex collaborative project.

The studentship will cover tuition fees at the home fee rate and will provide a stipend at the EPSRC level (12,300 for 2006/7, with the possibility of an additional allowance of 1250 per annum). It is open to UK applicants, or other candidates who can demonstrate a connection to the UK, usually through residency.

Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr S L Evans: email EvansSL6@Cardiff.ac.uk.

Application forms can be obtained from the School of Engineering Research Office, email engineering-pgr@cf.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0) 29 2087 4642. Please write the reference SLE1/06 clearly on the top of your application form. Completed application forms should be submitted by post, along with all supporting documentation, to: Research Office, Cardiff School of Engineering, Cardiff University, Queen's Buildings, The Parade, CARDIFF CF24 3AA.

The closing date for applications is Friday, November 3rd .
