Research Engineer

The Physical Disabilities Branch at National Institutes of Health has an open position for a Research Engineer in the Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (BBE) Section. The Physical Disabilities Branch is collaboration between the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Clinical Research Center of the National Institutes of Health.

Purpose:
The Research Engineer will serve as an assistant to the Principal Investigator of the Virtual functional Anatomy (VFA) Initiative. The ultimate goal of the VFA Initiative is to characterize, non-invasively and in vivo, the musculoskeletal system at the component level (joint anatomy and tissue dynamics) during functional movements in order to fill the important knowledge gap that exists in the relationship between functional movement limitations and impaired joint structure or function. This is being accomplished by developing a set of interdisciplinary tools that will allow the accurate and precise measurement of three-dimensional static and dynamic musculoskeletal anatomy (i.e., bone shape, skeletal kinematics, tendon and ligament strain, tendon moment arms, muscle force, and joint space). Specifically, an analytical and experimental framework will be built which will enable a novel experimental tool, fast phase contrast magnetic resonance imaging (fast-PC MRI) to be combined with high-resolution 3D musculoskeletal models. The Research Assistant will provide high quality scientific, technical support of research activities (population-based), act as a subject liaison, and serve as an instrumentation, methods and applications expert in the area of static and dynamic MRI data capture and analysis. This opportunity will provide access to advanced technology involving biomedical and biomechanical engineering and all aspects of a highly productive rehabilitation research program.

Technical Requirements:
This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in engineering, physics or the sciences. Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and biomechanics methodologies is essential. Working knowledge and/or experience with MR imaging techniques would be beneficial, but not essential.

Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Conduct experiments with appropriate methodology, collect and analyze data carefully, and maintain well-organized records and research notes.
b. Act as human subject liaison by working with the PDB human subjects' coordinator. Coordinate the proper paperwork hand-offs, ensure that all subjects have the necessary information prior to coming to NIH and accompanying with the subjects once they are at NIH to ensure they follow the necessary procedures and that all paperwork is complete.
c. Manage transferring, coding, storage, security and access to confidential patient data collected from scans and patient evaluations.
d. Design experiments under the direction of the principle investigator (based on the experience of the person filling this role, opportunities to initiate original research may be provided).
e. Work with the Radiology Department to schedule human subject experiments.
f. Maintain and support the current MRI scanning protocols and help maintain the associated data analysis tools.
g. Work with industry personnel and other MR experts to maintain the unique scanning protocols as state-of-the-art.
h. Assist with the development and testing of new MR data capture and analysis methods.
i. Develop and implement instructional materials for effectively training students, interns, fellows, and visiting scientists on correct state-of-the-art methodology for analyzing human movement.
j. Disseminates findings from this work in terms of conference abstracts, posters, lectures, and papers.

Skill or Knowledge Required:
a. A proven high level of organizational and communication, both written and oral, skills.
b. Demonstrated ability to work with others and provide training opportunities at various levels.
c. Demonstrated ability to conduct the administrative tasks necessary to create and maintain research data files in compliance with scientific and patient confidentiality standards.
d. Demonstrated proficiency to work within the Microsoft package of programs.
e. Demonstrated proficiency in computer programming (C++ and Matlab).
f. Ability to conduct research under the guidance of the VFA Principle Investigator.
