PhD Studentships, Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London

The world-class Department of Bioengineering (rated 5* in the Research
Assessment Exercise) has available for October 2007 2 BBSRC-funded CASE
or standard studentships and possibly additional department-funded
studentships. It also wishes to select candidates to put forward for the
Microsoft PhD scholarship


and for the Lee Family Scholarship, Overseas Research Students Fee
Support Scheme and Deputy Rector's Awards


BBSRC studentships are open to candidates who have been normally
resident in the UK for at least 3 years. Departmental studentships and
Microsoft scholarships are also open to EU nationals. Lee Family
Scholarships are open to candidates of Chinese nationality who are
ordinarily resident in Mainland China or Hong Kong. ORS and Deputy
Rector's Awards are for overseas candidates. Candidates should have, or
expect to obtain, at least a good 2.1 or equivalent in a relevant first


The Departments research interests lie within the following broad

* Biomechanics and robotics

* Biological and medical imaging

* Biophysical and physiological modelling

* Medical devices and informatics

* Neuroscience and neural computation

* Physiological fluid mechanics

Candidates should look at the Departmental Website
http://www.imperial.ac.uk/bioengineering to find supervisors and topics
of interest within these themes.

For the BBSRC studentships the topic needs to be within the remit of
BBSRC and preferably within areas that BBSRC is trying to promote
(www.bbsrc.ac.uk). For the Microsoft scholarship the topic should be
closely allied with the field of computing.

Deadline: Candidates for the Lee, ORS and Deputy Rector's awards need
an application in the College system by January 16th. For other
candidates, the deadline is January 31st.
