Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Engineering, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland



Description:

The National University of Ireland, Galway invites applications for the post of Senior Lectureship in Biomedical Engineering. The Department of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering wishes to recruit an outstanding individual for the above full-time permanent post. Since its establishment at NUI, Galway, in 1998, the Biomedical Engineering programme has experienced rapid expansion with respect to undergraduate student numbers, postgraduate research students, research funding, and industry interaction. The undergraduate programme in Biomedical Engineering, which is internationally accredited, is interdisciplinary in scope with students taking courses in the Engineering, Science, and Medical and Health Sciences Faculties. The Department is also affiliated with the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES), which is located on the NUI, Galway campus. A new EUR60 million Faculty of Engineering building is at an advanced design stage with a target completion date of 2009 and will house all engineering departments with excellent teaching and research facilities. Additionally, Galway is the focus of the highest concentration of medical device companies in Europe including over 50% of the world's top 25 biomedical companies, which support approximately 10,000 jobs in manufacturing and research and development.



The appointee will be required to: Contribute strongly to the teaching and continuing development of undergraduate courses and the supervision of postgraduate research students. Develop inter-disciplinary research and teaching linkages both within and outside the University and with the medical device industry. Develop an outstanding and funded research programme in one or more areas of interest such as biomaterials, nanotechnology, cellular engineering, tissue engineering, tissue or cellular biomechanics, medical implant design and fabrication.

Qualifications:

The successful applicant will: Hold a PhD in Biomedical Engineering or in a related engineering discipline. Have a significant publication record or equivalent industrial experience in Biomedical Engineering. Have demonstrated an ability to attract substantial research funding. Possess interpersonal skills commensurate with the need to communicate both with students and colleagues over a wide range of disciplines and interests.
