Graduate Assistantship in Orthopedic Biomechanics

Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Kansas Medical Center

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is seeking a well-qualified and
dedicated graduate student to pursue research within our laboratories at
the University of Kansas Medical Center. The Department will partially
support a graduate student pursuing an MS or PhD in Bioengineering as
part of the Mechanical Engineering or Bioengineering programs at the
University of Kansas. The Orthopedic Research Laboratories, part of the
Department of Orthopedic Surgery, are endowed to provide research
support to faculty, residents and students by the Marc A. and Elinor J.
Orthopedic Research Endowment, and the Mary Alice and Paul R. Harrington
Research Endowment.

Areas of research include biomechanics and correction of spinal
deformity, tissue engineering, tissue ingrowth and adhesion to novel
implant materials, ankle replacement biomechanics, development and
evaluation of new surgical techniques and instrumentation, computational
modeling of ligaments.

The research facilities comprise over 4000 ft2 of lab and office space
including testing facilities, full machine shop, dissection/specimen
preparation rooms, histology lab, cell culture laboratory. Access to
and collaboration with orthopedic surgeons is an advantage of working
directly in an orthopedic laboratory.

The selected student should begin coursework by Summer or Fall 2007.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. To ensure
maximal consideration for additional scholarship funding through the
University, applications should be submitted without delay.
Supplemental funding may be available for early applications and will
depend on student qualifications.

Please contact Dr. McIff by email if interested and provide a CV or
brief background description including academic qualifications and
interests.
