Research Biomechanist (Engineer)
The Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research &
Development Center of Excellence for Limb Loss Prevention and
Prosthetic Engineering (Seattle, WA) has a position available for a
Research Biomechanist (Engineer) with emphasis on motion analysis.
The mission of our Center is to improve the quality of life and
functional status of veterans who are at risk for lower limb
amputation and veterans who are amputees. The successful candidate
will assist the center directors, senior staff, collaborating
investigators and University of Washington graduate students in the
design and execution of research studies appropriate to this mission.
Duties will include: assisting in research study design, development
of methodology, working with human subjects, conducting experiments,
data analysis and reporting of results. Additional tasks include
assistance with grant writing and manuscript preparation. Supervisory
functions include providing direction and technical assistance for
laboratory technicians and graduate students conducting research
studies. Technical competencies include the calibration and day-to-
day maintenance of laboratory equipment including: force and pressure
plates, optical and electromagnetic motion analysis systems,
accelerometers, load cells, electromyography systems and metabolic
performance equipment.

Center investigators collaborate with University of Washington
Departments of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation
Medicine, Bioengineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical
Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Biology and the
Applied Physics Laboratory. The purpose of the Center's research is
to provide further understanding of biomechanics and applications in
the fields of orthopaedics, rehabilitation, amputation prevention,
gait analysis and prosthetic design. This work has the potential for
having a major impact on the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation
of veterans and non-veterans suffering physical trauma and diminished
lower limb function.

This position requires a Master of Science degree in Mechanical
Engineering, Biomechanics, or Bioengineering, as well as knowledge of
the theories, principles, practices and techniques of biomechanics.
The candidate should have a least one year experience working in a
motion analysis laboratory and must have demonstrated the ability to
conduct scholarly research by completing a project and publishing the
results. Necessary skills include knowledge and experience in
mechanical engineering and bioengineering, computer systems, anatomy
and physiology, medical statistics, execution of research studies,
and preparation of publications and reports. The ideal candidate
should have supervisory experience as well. Experience with the use
of machine shop and electronic assembly tools to construct
specialized research instruments and fixtures would be advantageous.
