The position announcement described below is part of three new academic
programs provided by The University of Southern Mississippi. The
undergraduate and graduate programs combine academic and research training
in polymer science and high performance materials with human performance:
exercise physiology, kinesiology, and biomechanics. The emphasis is to
better understand the human-materials interface. A major purpose is to
prepare professionals at various levels for the materials, sporting goods,
emergency first responder, and soldier systems industries.

Assistant/Associate Professor

The University of Southern Mississippi's School of Human Performance and
Recreation invites applications for a research tenure-track faculty position
in biomechanics at the assistant/associate rank beginning August 21, 2007.
This faculty member will work with a research team in the B.S., M.S. and
Ph.D. Sports and High Performance Materials academic programs. These
recently created, multidisciplinary programs are designed to study the
interface between high performance materials and human performance. Salary
and research start-up support is commensurate with qualifications and

(1) Develop an externally funded line of research in one or more areas
related to human - equipment/apparel interface in sport, emergency
first-responder, and soldier system applications
(2) Assist in the development, operation, and maintenance of a biomechanics
(3) Develop, supervise, and provide biomechanics research support for Sports
and High Performance Materials projects
(4) Teach courses and advise graduate student research dissertations in the
Sports and High Performance Materials curriculum

Minimum Qualifications:
(1) Doctorate in biomechanics, biomedical engineering, or other related
(2) Active research and publication record
(3) Research experience with human motion analysis utilizing motion capture
systems and force data acquisition systems
(4) Record of externally funded research

Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Postdoctoral experience in biomechanics
(2) Research experience in clinical settings
(3) Teaching and research experience at the university level
(4) Research and experience in industrial settings
(5) Research experience with the instrumentation and testing of sport
